The two sets of numbers, and why they disagree

Search for New Zealand student visa processing times and you will find two different answers on INZ's own website. Both are correct. They measure different things, and nobody explains the difference.

The Fee Paying Student Visa page says 80% of applications are decided within 8.5 weeks. That is a whole-of-product figure covering every student on that visa, at every kind of provider, from every country.

The student visa wait times table publishes times by provider type:

Provider type Average (50% decided by) Most completed within (80%)
Universities 2.5 weeks 7 weeks
Polytechnics and institutes of technology 5.5 weeks 9 weeks
Private Training Establishments 4 weeks 9 weeks
Schools 2 weeks 5 weeks

That table covers the Fee Paying Student Visa (including English language students), the Pathway Student Visa, the NZ Government Scholarship Student Visa and the Exchange Student Visa.

The 8.5-week product figure sits above every individual provider band. It is not an average of the bands; it is a different cut of the same data, and it reflects the tail of harder applications rather than the typical one.

Which number describes you depends on where you are enrolled. That is one of the most consequential and least discussed effects of provider choice, and it is covered further in our comparison of New Zealand education providers.

What "average" and "80%" actually mean

INZ's processing tool reports two percentiles: the date by which 50% of applications are processed, and the date by which 80% are.

That is a deliberate and honest way to publish. It also means one in five applications takes longer than the 80% figure, and INZ does not publish how much longer. A university applicant reading "7 weeks for 80%" is reading a number with a 20% tail attached to it.

Plan against the 80% figure, not the average. The average is what happens when nothing goes wrong.

What makes an application slower

INZ names the causes itself:

  • Information is missing from the application
  • Further information is needed and has to be requested
  • Third-party checks are required — and INZ states it has limited control over how long those take

Those three explain most of the spread. An application that arrives complete, with translations attached, funds explained and every requirement evidenced, is assessed once. An application that triggers a request for further information goes to the back of a queue, waits for your reply, and then waits again.

This is the single biggest lever an applicant holds. A decision-ready application is not a guarantee of speed, but an incomplete one is close to a guarantee of delay.

Nationality and processing

INZ explicitly warns applicants from India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan to expect longer processing times.

That is INZ's published statement, and it is useful precisely because it lets people plan. It is not a comment on individual applicants, and it does not say anything about the outcome of any particular application. It reflects volume, verification workload and third-party checks.

These are also the markets growing fastest. Nepal's tertiary enrolments went from 595 to 2,425 in two years. Sri Lanka's went from 905 in 2023 to 3,075 in 2025. Bangladesh's student approvals rose 150% to 2,317. More applications from a country, assessed with the same verification requirements, means longer queues.

If you are applying from one of these countries, the practical response is time: apply earlier than the published figure suggests, and give yourself room for one round of questions.

The peaks

INZ names two peak periods for student visa processing in its own words:

  • The main peak: October to March
  • The mid-year peak: May to August

Both are driven by the academic calendar. New Zealand's university year starts in late February to early March, and semester two starts in mid to late July. Applications arrive three to five months ahead of each intake, which is exactly what creates the peaks.

INZ advises applying at least three months before you intend to travel. In 2026 student visa demand is running around 20% higher than the previous year, which does not shorten queues. Full timing guidance is on when to apply.

Processing times for the other student visas

Visa 80% decided within
Fee Paying Student Visa 8.5 weeks
Pathway Student Visa 8.5 weeks
Exchange Student Visa 4 weeks
Foreign Government Supported Student Visa 3 weeks
Dependent Child Student Visa 10 weeks
Guardian Visitor Visa 8 weeks
Post Study Work Visa 3.5 weeks

The Post Study Work Visa is one of the faster products in the whole system at 3.5 weeks, which matters because it is applied for against a hard deadline after study ends. See Post Study Work Visa duration and deadlines.

Note that a family applying together does not move at one speed. A student on a university band and a guardian on an 8-week visitor product can be granted weeks apart.

There is no way to speed this up

New Zealand has no paid priority or express processing for any visa, at any price. This is worth stating plainly because it is one of the most common scam pitches aimed at students, and because the absence of the option is genuinely surprising to people used to other countries' systems.

What does exist:

  • Applying early, which is free and effective
  • Submitting a complete application, which avoids the request-for-information cycle
  • Answering INZ promptly when it does ask

What does not exist: a fee that moves you up a queue. Anyone offering one is describing a service INZ does not sell. See paid priority processing in New Zealand.

Checking your own application

INZ publishes an interactive processing-time tool that asks for your visa type and the date you applied, and returns an estimated decision date. INZ's own caveat is that the tool "does not currently have all visa processing times available".

Your application status is visible in your Immigration Online account. Chasing INZ before the published time has elapsed does not accelerate anything, and it is worth reading what happens after you submit before assuming something has gone wrong.

Where to confirm this

Processing times move. Every figure here carries the date it was checked, and it is worth re-checking against INZ before you commit to travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get a New Zealand student visa?

INZ publishes 80% of Fee Paying Student Visa applications decided within 8.5 weeks. By provider type, universities average 2.5 weeks, schools 2 weeks, private training establishments 4 weeks and polytechnics 5.5 weeks, with 80% figures of 7, 5, 9 and 9 weeks.

How many days does a New Zealand student visa take?

INZ publishes weeks rather than days, at two percentiles: the point by which half of applications are decided, and the point by which 80% are. Converting those to a day count for your own application would be guesswork, because the remaining 20% have no published upper bound.

Why does INZ publish two different student visa processing times?

Because they measure different things. The 8.5-week figure is for the Fee Paying Student Visa as a whole product. The provider-type table splits the same population by where the student is enrolled. Both are published by INZ and neither is wrong.

Which provider type has the fastest student visa processing?

Schools, at 2 weeks average and 5 weeks for 80% of applications, followed by universities at 2.5 weeks average and 7 weeks for 80%.

Does applying from India or Nepal take longer?

INZ explicitly warns applicants from India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan to expect longer processing times. That is a published statement about processing workload, not about any individual application.

Can I pay to speed up my New Zealand student visa?

No. New Zealand has no priority or express service for visa applications at any price. Applying early and submitting a complete application are the only things that reliably shorten the wait.

When should I apply for a New Zealand student visa?

INZ advises applying at least three months before you intend to travel, and names peaks between October and March and between May and August. Applying inside a peak, from a country flagged for longer processing, is the combination that produces missed start dates.
