Extending a Student Visa in New Zealand
New Zealand has no student visa renewal button. You apply for a further student visa from inside the country, paying the $485 fee and $265 immigration levy again and meeting the funds test again. The Fee Paying Student Visa is capped at four years in total.

There is no renewal, only a further visa
New Zealand does not extend student visas in the sense of adding time to an existing one. You apply for a further student visa, and it is assessed as an application in its own right.
That has three consequences people are not expecting:
- You pay again. The $485 application fee and the $265 immigration levy apply to the onshore application.
- You are assessed again, against funds, health, character, insurance and genuine intention.
- It can be declined, in which case your existing visa still expires on the date it always did.
An application from inside New Zealand is not a formality because you are already here.
The caps
| Visa | Maximum |
|---|---|
| Fee Paying Student Visa | 4 years, usually matched to the paid study period or passport expiry, whichever comes first |
| Pathway Student Visa | 5 years, across up to 3 consecutive courses |
The four-year cap on the Fee Paying visa is a ceiling on that product, and a long degree plus a preceding foundation year can run into it. Students planning a sequence of courses have the Pathway Student Visa as the product designed for it — one visa, up to three consecutive courses, up to five years.
Passport expiry is the cap people forget. A visa is usually granted to the earlier of the paid study period and your passport expiry. A passport with fourteen months left produces a short visa regardless of a three-year enrolment, and then a second application fee to fix it. Renewing the passport first is cheaper.
Step 1: Find your visa expiry date and work backwards
The expiry printed on your current visa is the date that governs everything. It is in your approval letter and in your Immigration Online account.
INZ advises applying at least three months ahead, and names processing peaks between October and March and between May and August. Since most course extensions line up with semester boundaries, extension applications tend to land inside a peak.
Step 2: Get the new offer of place or enrolment confirmation
The further visa needs its own basis: a new offer of place, a confirmation of continued enrolment, or evidence of the next course. The provider must still be a signatory to the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021.
Step 3: Prepare the funds evidence again
Onshore applicants face the same funds test as offshore ones: NZ$20,000 a year for tertiary study, or NZ$1,667 a month for shorter courses, plus tuition for one year or the course length if shorter. For school years 1 to 13 it is NZ$17,000 a year.
Time in New Zealand does not reduce the requirement. See proving funds.
Step 4: Apply online before your current visa expires
Applications are online only. Applying before your current visa expires may lead to an interim visa while the decision is made, which keeps your status lawful. Applying after it expires does not.
That single sequencing point is the difference between a routine extension and a serious problem.
If your visa expires before you apply
If your student visa expires while you are in New Zealand and nothing else has been granted, you are in New Zealand unlawfully. INZ's position is direct: you must leave immediately.
While unlawful:
- You cannot work or study
- You are ineligible for publicly funded health services, with limited exceptions
- You face potential detention and deportation
Staying unlawfully for a sustained period can lead to a ban on returning to New Zealand.
There is a discretionary route — a section 61 request — asking INZ to grant a visa in special circumstances while you are unlawfully in the country. Making the request costs nothing up front, though a fee is payable if a visa is granted in principle. INZ states plainly that making a request does not automatically stop deportation, and that a visa cannot be granted under section 61 once a deportation order has been issued.
This is not a fallback plan. It is an emergency measure, and it is the point at which a New Zealand lawyer or licensed immigration adviser should be involved immediately. See section 61 requests.
Extending is not the only option
Depending on what you are actually trying to do, a further student visa may not be the relevant product.
Finished your qualification and want to work? The Post Study Work Visa gives up to three years of work rights, costs from NZ$1,670, and must normally be applied for no later than three months after your student visa expires — six months for doctoral graduates, who may also apply after submitting the thesis. It can only be held once, ever.
Changing provider or course? That is a different mechanism again — a variation of conditions at NZ$325, or a new visa.
Been offered a job? An employer-sponsored work visa is a separate product with separate requirements, starting with an accredited employer.
Which of these applies to you is a question about your circumstances, which means it is a question for INZ or a licensed adviser rather than for a general guide.
What an extension costs
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Onshore student visa application fee | $485 |
| Immigration levy | $265 |
| Variation of conditions, if that is the right mechanism instead | NZ$325 |
| Post Study Work Visa, if you are moving on | from NZ$1,670 |
Fees and levies are not refunded if an application is declined. There has been no general fee or levy increase in 2025 or 2026 — INZ's published schedule still reads as at 1 October 2024.

What happens if my student visa expires before my new one is granted?
If nothing else has been granted and your visa has expired, you are in New Zealand unlawfully. You cannot work or study, you are ineligible for most publicly funded health services, and you face potential deportation. Applying before expiry avoids this.
Do I have to show funds again to extend?
Yes. Onshore applicants face the same test: NZ$20,000 a year for tertiary study, or NZ$1,667 a month for shorter courses, plus tuition. Time already spent in New Zealand does not reduce it.
Can I apply for a Post Study Work Visa instead of extending?
The Post Study Work Visa is a separate product for graduates of eligible qualifications, applied for normally within three months of the student visa expiring — six months for doctoral graduates. It can only be held once, and missing the deadline forfeits it permanently.
Does my passport expiry limit my student visa?
Yes. A student visa is usually granted to match the paid study period or your passport expiry, whichever comes first. Renewing a short-dated passport before applying avoids a truncated visa and a second application fee.
