What it is for

Most students in New Zealand do not do one course and leave. They do a foundation year and then a degree, or an English language course and then a diploma, or a diploma and then a degree top-up.

Under the ordinary Fee Paying Student Visa, each of those is a separate visa: a new application, a new fee, a new levy, a new assessment, and a gap in the middle while you wait.

The Pathway Student Visa collapses that into one visa covering up to three consecutive courses, for up to five years. One application, one fee, one decision.

What it costs

Component Amount
Application fee $485
Immigration levy $265
Total from NZ$750

The Pathway total contains no International Visitor Levy in the cheapest case, which is the whole of the NZ$100 difference from the Fee Paying Student Visa's NZ$850.

Compare that with the alternative. Three separate Fee Paying Student Visas would be three lots of $485 plus three lots of $265 plus IVL each time. Where three courses are genuinely planned, the saving is substantial — and the saved time is worth more than the money.

The two visas are not competing offers for the same thing. The Pathway visa only exists where a pathway offer of place exists, and only approved pathway education providers can issue one. You cannot convert an ordinary offer into a pathway one by asking.

The prerequisite rule — read this part twice

You must meet the prerequisites for the second and third courses to stay on the visa.

That is the condition the whole product turns on. The visa is granted on the strength of a plan: course one, then course two, then course three. If you do not meet the entry requirements for the next course in that sequence, the basis for the visa has changed.

In practice that means:

  • Failing course one can put the rest of the visa in question, not just your grades.
  • Changing your mind about course two is not a free choice — the visa was granted for a specified sequence.
  • A course being withdrawn or changed by the provider affects the visa as well as the timetable.

A student who fails a foundation year on a Fee Paying Student Visa has a course problem. A student who fails it on a Pathway visa may have a course problem and a visa problem at the same time.

Where a sequence stops working, the mechanism that changes what a visa covers is a variation of conditions at NZ$325, or a new visa. Which of those applies depends on the circumstances — a question for INZ or a licensed adviser rather than for a general guide. See changing provider or course.

Requirements

A Pathway Student Visa offer of place from an approved pathway education provider. Not an ordinary offer.

Funds: NZ$20,000 a year, or NZ$1,667 a month. The same tertiary rate as the Fee Paying visa. Note that a visa spanning five years does not mean showing five years of money — INZ's position on multi-year study is that a credible funding plan for later years strengthens the application even where the money is not yet held. See proving funds.

Full medical and travel insurance. The Pathway visa is one of the products where INZ states the standard explicitly rather than saying "appropriate". Cover has to run for the time you are in New Zealand.

Health, character and a genuine intention to study, as with every student visa.

Work rights

Up to 25 hours a week during study, and full-time work during scheduled holidays, for visas granted on or after 3 November 2025. The previous figure was 20 hours.

Age rules apply as they do across student visas: students aged 15 or younger cannot work, and 16 and 17 year olds at a tertiary provider need permission from the provider and from a parent. See student visa work rights.

Family

The Pathway Student Visa cannot include a partner or dependent children. They apply separately for their own visas, and pay their own fee and levy.

That is the same restriction as the Fee Paying Student Visa, and it is worth knowing before a five-year plan is built around it. See bringing your partner and children.

Who this suits, factually

We are not going to tell you whether to apply for this visa — that is an assessment of your circumstances, which is regulated advice in New Zealand. What we can do is set out the facts that distinguish it.

The Pathway visa exists for a planned, sequential study programme with an approved pathway provider, where the courses are known in advance and the prerequisites are achievable. Its advantages are one fee, one decision, five years of coverage and no gaps between courses.

Its risk is concentration: everything rests on the sequence holding together. A student whose plans are genuinely settled is in a different position from one who expects to reconsider after the first year.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Pathway Student Visa in New Zealand?

A student visa that covers up to three consecutive courses on a single visa, to a maximum of five years. It requires a Pathway Student Visa offer of place from an approved pathway education provider and costs from NZ$750.

How much does the Pathway Student Visa cost?

From NZ$750 — a $485 application fee plus a $265 immigration levy, with no International Visitor Levy in the cheapest case. That is NZ$100 less than the Fee Paying Student Visa, and the difference is the IVL.

Can I study three courses on one New Zealand student visa?

Yes, on the Pathway Student Visa, where all three are consecutive and covered by a pathway offer of place from an approved pathway provider. You must meet the prerequisites for the second and third courses to remain on the visa.

What happens if I fail a course on a Pathway Student Visa?

The visa is granted on the basis that you will meet the prerequisites for the next course in the sequence. Not meeting them affects the basis of the visa, not just your studies. What can be done then depends on the circumstances and is a question for INZ or a licensed immigration adviser.

Does the Pathway Student Visa require insurance?

Yes, and it is one of the products where INZ specifies full medical and travel insurance rather than simply appropriate insurance.

Can I bring my partner on a Pathway Student Visa?

No. The Pathway Student Visa cannot include a partner or dependent children. They apply separately for their own visas and pay their own fee and levy.

How long does the Pathway Student Visa take to process?

INZ publishes 80% of applications decided within 8.5 weeks, the same whole-of-product figure as the Fee Paying Student Visa. Wait times are also published by provider type, ranging from 2 weeks for schools to 5.5 weeks average for polytechnics.

Can I switch from a Fee Paying Student Visa to a Pathway Student Visa?

They are separate visa products with separate applications, and the Pathway visa requires a pathway offer of place that only approved pathway providers can issue. Whether a switch is possible in a particular case is a question for INZ or a licensed adviser.
