No quota, no calendar

The USA scheme is one of the 13 with no annual limit and no opening date. There is nothing to diarise, no 10:00 New Zealand time alarm and no risk of the places running out while you assemble documents.

That puts Americans in the easiest group in the system, alongside Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. See capped and uncapped schemes.

The one real deadline is your 31st birthday. The scheme runs 18–30 inclusive and there is no waiver.

You must normally reside in the USA

This is the scheme's one distinctive requirement. It is not enough to hold a US passport — you must normally reside in the United States when you apply.

US nationals as well as US citizens are covered by New Zealand's visa-waiver arrangement for ordinary travel, which is unusual and worth knowing for people from American Samoa and the other territories.

What it costs

Component Amount
Application fee NZ$215
Immigration levy NZ$455
International Visitor Levy NZ$100
Total NZ$770

At August 2026 exchange rates that is a modest figure by international standards, and it has not moved: there has been no general INZ fee or levy increase since 1 October 2024.

On the fee-waiver question. New Zealand holds a bilateral fee-waiver agreement with the United States covering specified offshore visitor, work and student visa types. INZ nevertheless publishes NZ$770 on this scheme's page, and no such agreement ever covers the International Visitor Levy. Confirm with INZ whether a waiver applies to your application before assuming it does — see bilateral fee waiver countries.

Funds: NZ$4,200, plus the ticket

NZ$4,200 is the standard figure across most of the 45 schemes, and it works out at NZ$350 a month across a 12-month stay.

The return ticket sits on top. Every scheme requires a ticket out of New Zealand, or proof of enough money to buy one, in addition to the living funds. Showing exactly NZ$4,200 does not satisfy both. See the funds requirement.

Extending to 15 months

The Working Holiday Extension Work Visa adds 3 months for at least 3 months of planting, maintaining, harvesting or packing crops in horticulture or viticulture. It costs NZ$800 and can be used once per person, ever.

Two categories of work are not accepted towards those 3 months: plant nurseries and food processing.

The full breakdown is at which seasonal work qualifies.

Americans in New Zealand

6,331 US nationals were approved for work visas in FY2025/26, and 2,857 for residence — a 76% rise, the biggest single increase of any nationality in the dataset. INZ does not attribute a cause to that jump, and neither will we.

The USA is also on New Zealand's 60-country visa-waiver list, so ordinary travel needs only an NZeTA plus the International Visitor Levy — but that permits no work. See the NZ visa for American citizens and NZeTA for American citizens.

Step 1: Confirm you are inside the age range and normally resident in the USA

Both are eligibility rules, and neither is discretionary.

Step 2: Evidence NZ$4,200, plus the return ticket separately

Bank statements in your own name with some history behind the balance.

Step 3: Arrange medical insurance for the whole 12 months

Full cover including hospitalisation, current for the entire stay, and it may be checked when you arrive in New Zealand. Ordinary short-trip travel insurance rarely qualifies.

Step 4: Check whether a chest x-ray is triggered

A chest x-ray applies if you have spent more than 3 months in the last 5 years in a country with a high rate of tuberculosis, if you are staying longer than 12 months, or if you are applying from inside New Zealand. Evidence must reach INZ within 15 days of submitting and be less than 3 months old.

Step 5: Apply online and pay NZ$770

Lodged online, in English. See how to apply.

Step 6: Travel within 12 months of the grant

The visa expires unused if you do not make your first entry in time, and the fee is not refunded.

Conditions while you are here

No job offer is needed to apply, and the USA scheme sets no per-employer limit. Study is capped at 6 months in total, including any extension. You cannot take a permanent job.

From 20 April 2026, holders must work under an employment agreement or a contract for services, and cannot sole-trade, own or operate a business, or employ others. That change matters more to Americans than to most, because freelance and own-account work is common in the group. See the self-employment rule.

You will need an IRD number to be taxed correctly — see IRD number and tax for new migrants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can US citizens get a New Zealand working holiday visa?

Yes. The USA scheme has no quota and no opening date, runs from 18 to 30 inclusive, lasts 12 months and costs NZ$770. You must normally reside in the United States when you apply.

Is there a quota for Americans?

No. The USA is one of 13 schemes with no annual limit, so applications are accepted year-round and the places cannot run out.

What is the age limit?

18 to 30 inclusive. The USA is not one of the nine schemes that runs to 35.

How much money do I need?

NZ$4,200, plus a return ticket or enough money to buy one, which must be additional to the NZ$4,200.

Do I have to live in the United States to apply?

Yes. The scheme requires you to normally reside in the USA, not simply to hold a US passport.

How long does it take?

Half of working holiday applications are decided within 4 days and 80% within 1.5 weeks. There is no paid faster option.

Can I stay longer than 12 months?

By 3 months, using the Working Holiday Extension Work Visa, which requires at least 3 months of qualifying horticulture or viticulture work and costs NZ$800. That gives a maximum of 15 months.

Can I freelance while I am there?

Not from 20 April 2026. Holders must work under an employment agreement or a contract for services, and cannot sole-trade, own a business or employ others. Anyone granted a visa before that date keeps their previous conditions until it expires.

Can I apply twice?

No. The visa can be held once in a lifetime, and INZ's pages state that this applies even if you never used the visa you were granted.
