Why this is the best deal in the system

Four settings combine, and no other scheme has all four.

Age to 35. Only nine of the 45 schemes run past 30. This is one, alongside Argentina, Canada, Chile, the Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary, Slovakia and Uruguay.

Up to 36 months. No other scheme comes close. Canada is second at 23 months; every other scheme is 12, and two are 6.

Funds of NZ$350 a month. Expressed per month rather than as a lump sum, which means a 12-month visa requires the same NZ$4,200 as everyone else — but you choose the duration, and therefore the amount.

15,000 places. Five times the next-largest cap, and enough that the scheme has not run out.

The scheme is capped, not uncapped

This is the correction that matters most, because the error is published almost everywhere.

15,000 is a quota. When it is reached, the scheme closes to new applications until its next opening date, exactly like the other 31 capped schemes. It opened at 10:00 New Zealand time on 25 June 2026.

You will read the opposite constantly — that there is no limit, that it is always open, that it is uncapped. That is wrong. What is true is that 15,000 places is generous relative to demand, and the scheme was still accepting applications on 20 August 2026, eight weeks after it opened.

The practical difference matters. If you believe there is no quota, you never check the opening date and you never notice that one exists. See capped and uncapped schemes.

Who counts as a UK applicant

You must be a British citizen ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom, or in one of the Crown Dependencies — Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man.

Two things follow from that wording. It is about citizenship plus ordinary residence, not just holding a British passport. And British nationals in other categories are not automatically covered; British National (Overseas) passport holders resident in Hong Kong are covered by the separate Hong Kong SAR scheme, which has 400 places and opened on 19 March 2026.

Choosing 12, 23 or 36 months

You choose the duration when you apply, and the funds requirement follows the choice.

Duration Funds at NZ$350 a month
12 months NZ$4,200
23 months NZ$8,050
36 months NZ$12,600

INZ publishes the monthly rate, not these totals — the amounts above are what that rate produces. Confirm the figure for your chosen duration on the scheme page before you apply.

There is also a second route to the ceiling. A holder who took less than 36 months can apply for a further visa to bring the total up to 36 months. That application:

  • is made on a paper form, not online
  • must be made from within New Zealand, while holding a valid visa under this scheme
  • requires you to re-demonstrate the NZ$350 a month for the additional period

So taking 12 months first is not a permanent commitment. It does mean a second application, a second fee and a paper form.

Stacking to 39 months

The Working Holiday Extension Work Visa adds 3 months for at least 3 months of planting, maintaining, harvesting or packing crops in horticulture or viticulture. It costs NZ$800 and can be used once per person, ever.

It stacks on top of the 36-month ceiling. A holder who takes the full 36 months and completes qualifying seasonal work can reach 39 months in New Zealand on this route — the longest stay available under any working holiday arrangement anywhere in the system.

Two categories of work are not accepted towards those 3 months: plant nurseries and food processing.

There is a full breakdown at which seasonal work qualifies.

What it costs

Component Amount
Application fee NZ$215
Immigration levy NZ$455
International Visitor Levy NZ$100
Total NZ$770

The same NZ$770 applies whether you take 12 months or 36. There has been no general INZ fee or levy increase since 1 October 2024. See what a working holiday visa costs.

Britain and New Zealand, in context

England is New Zealand's number one census birthplace, at 208,428 people — larger than any other single origin. In FY2025/26 the UK recorded 11,412 work visa approvals and 2,267 residence approvals.

British travellers also get something no other nationality does: a 6-month visa-free stay as a visitor, where every other visa-waiver country gets 3. That is separate from this visa and does not permit work. See the NZ visa for British citizens.

Step 1: Confirm citizenship and ordinary residence

British citizen, ordinarily resident in the UK, Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man.

Step 2: Choose your duration before you calculate funds

Twelve, 23 or 36 months. The funds requirement is NZ$350 for each month you choose.

Step 3: Assemble funds, a return ticket and insurance

The return ticket, or the money to buy one, is required in addition to the funds. Medical insurance covering hospitalisation must run for the whole stay and may be checked when you arrive.

Step 4: Check whether a medical or chest x-ray is triggered

Anyone staying longer than 12 months needs a chest x-ray, and anyone staying over 12 months in total needs a full medical examination. That means the 23 and 36-month options trigger both. Evidence must reach INZ within 15 days of submitting and be less than 3 months old. See insurance and medical requirements.

Step 5: Apply online and pay NZ$770

Lodged online, in English. See how to apply.

Step 6: Travel within 12 months of the grant

The visa expires if you do not make your first entry within 12 months of it being granted.

Once, ever

You may hold a working holiday visa once in your lifetime, and INZ's country pages state that this applies even if you did not use the visa.

The further visa described above is not an exception. It tops up an existing visa to the 36-month ceiling; it does not create a second entitlement, and it is not available to someone whose earlier visa has already expired.

What comes next

The visa is temporary and carries no residence pathway. Common next steps are an Accredited Employer Work Visa — an accredited employer, a job of at least 30 hours a week, and either two years of relevant experience or a Level 4 qualification — or a student visa.

From 20 April 2026, holders must work under an employment agreement or a contract for services, and cannot sole-trade, own a business or employ others. See the self-employment rule.

Which route suits a particular person is regulated immigration advice in New Zealand. Use a licensed immigration adviser or a New Zealand lawyer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many places does the UK working holiday scheme have?

15,000 a year — the largest of the 45 schemes by a factor of five. It is a quota, and the scheme closes when it is reached.

How long is a UK working holiday visa valid for?

You choose 12, 23 or 36 months when you apply. Thirty-six months is the longest duration available on any New Zealand scheme.

How much money do UK applicants need?

NZ$350 per month of the stay you choose. That produces NZ$4,200 for 12 months, NZ$8,050 for 23 and NZ$12,600 for 36. A return ticket, or the money to buy one, is required in addition.

What is the age limit for UK applicants?

18 to 35 inclusive. This is one of only nine schemes that runs past 30.

When does the UK scheme open?

It opened on 25 June 2026 at 10:00 New Zealand time and was still accepting applications on 20 August 2026. Dates shift by roughly a week each year and INZ publishes the next year's in January.

Can I extend beyond 36 months?

Only by 3 months, using the Working Holiday Extension Work Visa, which requires at least 3 months of qualifying horticulture or viticulture work and costs NZ$800. That gives a maximum of 39 months. It can be used once per person, ever.

Can I take 12 months now and more later?

Yes. A holder who took less than 36 months can apply for a further visa up to that ceiling — on a paper form, from within New Zealand, while still holding a valid visa under this scheme, and re-demonstrating the NZ$350 a month.

Do I need a medical for a 36-month visa?

Yes. Staying longer than 12 months triggers a chest x-ray, and staying over 12 months in total triggers a full medical examination. Both must reach INZ within 15 days of submitting and be less than 3 months old.

Do Northern Ireland residents qualify?

The requirement is British citizenship plus ordinary residence in the United Kingdom or in Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man. Irish citizens have a separate scheme of their own, which is uncapped and open year-round.
