Visitor Visas & NZeTA

Is There a New Zealand Digital Nomad Visa? No — But There Is a Better Answer

New Zealand has no digital nomad visa. Since 27 January 2025 it does not need one: visitor visas permit unlimited remote work for an overseas employer.

Is There a New Zealand Digital Nomad Visa? No — But There Is a Better Answer

New Zealand has no digital nomad visa. No such product appears in INZ's visa lookup, which lists 168 visas, and none has been announced. What exists instead is broader than most nomad visas: since 27 January 2025 every visitor visa permits remote work for an overseas employer, with no limit on the amount of work.

Quick Facts

Is there a digital nomad visa? No. Absent from INZ's 168-product visa lookup as at 20 August 2026
What replaces it The remote-work condition on visitor visas, in force since 27 January 2025
Limit on the amount of work None
Income requirement None
Application for it None — it is a visa condition, not a product you apply for
Cost $117–$123 on an NZeTA, or from $441 for a Visitor Visa
Maximum stay 3 months on a visa waiver (6 for UK citizens), 6 months in any 12; or up to 9 months in 18 on a Visitor Visa
Leads to residence No
Real constraint The stay cap, and separately tax — which is Inland Revenue's, not INZ's

Why this page exists

"New Zealand digital nomad visa" is a query hundreds of people type every month for a thing that has never existed. Search engines answer it badly, and a number of commercial sites answer it dishonestly — some offer application forms for a visa New Zealand does not issue.

We checked this properly rather than assuming. INZ publishes a lookup of every visa product it offers; there are 168 of them, covering everything from the Antarctic Traveller Visitor Visa to the Super Yachts Visitor Visa. There is no digital nomad visa in it, no remote worker visa, and no nomad category by any other name. The capability people are looking for was delivered on 27 January 2025 by changing the conditions of visitor visas, not by creating a new one.

No dedicated product has been announced, and we are not going to imply that one is coming. If that changes, this page will change with it.

One further clarification, because it circulates: "Going for Growth" is the branding the New Zealand Government used for a group of tourism and investment announcements in early 2025. It is not the name of a visa.

What New Zealand actually offers

Set against a typical digital nomad visa, New Zealand's approach is unusual — better in some ways, worse in others, and worth understanding on its own terms.

Typical dedicated nomad visa New Zealand's visitor route
A product to apply for Yes No — it is a condition of an ordinary visitor visa
Minimum income test Usually yes None
Cap on amount of work Sometimes None
Separate application fee Usually No — you pay the ordinary visitor fee
Typical stay Often 12 months or more 3–9 months, depending on route
Renewable in country Often A further Visitor Visa is a fresh application, and the stay caps still bind
Leads to residence Rarely No

The trade is clear once you see it laid out. New Zealand is more permissive about the work than most nomad visas and more restrictive about the time.

The rule, in INZ's own words

INZ's operative statement: "All visitor visas applied for on or after 27 January 2025 allow you to work remotely in New Zealand."

The announcement that introduced it: "From today, visitor visas will allow people to work remotely for a foreign employer while they are holidaying here."

Three details do the work:

  • The employer or client must be based outside New Zealand. Working for a New Zealand employer requires a work visa, whatever the hours.
  • There is no limit on the amount of work. Not 90 days, not a maximum number of hours. Some sources publish a 90-day cap; INZ's own page says there is no limit on the amount, and that is the immigration rule.
  • The date attaches to the application, not to travel. A visitor visa applied for before 27 January 2025 does not acquire the allowance later.

Full detail, including what counts as prohibited work, is at working remotely in New Zealand on a visitor visa.

Step 1: Work out which visitor route applies to you

If your passport is on the visa-waiver list — 60 countries and territories as at August 2026 — you request an NZeTA and are granted a Visa Waiver Visitor Visa on arrival. If it is not, you apply for a Visitor Visa before you travel.

Waiver nationals who want longer than the waiver allows also apply for a Visitor Visa. That is the most common reason a remote worker from a waiver country ends up making a full application.

Step 2: Work out how long you can actually stay

This is the constraint that decides the trip, and it is worth doing before anything else.

Route Stay
NZeTA, most nationalities Up to 3 months per visit; maximum 6 months in any 12-month period
NZeTA, United Kingdom citizens Up to 6 months per visit; same 6-in-12 cap
Visitor Visa, single entry Up to 9 months in an 18-month period; the visa expires if you leave
Visitor Visa, multiple entry 6 months in each 12-month period; requires 9 months outside New Zealand in the preceding 18

There is no route that gives an ordinary remote worker a year in New Zealand. The full picture, including parent and transit limits, is at how long you can stay in New Zealand as a visitor.

Step 3: Get the NZeTA or the Visitor Visa

Cost Processing
NZeTA via the mobile app $117 — $17 + $100 IVL Allow 72 hours
NZeTA via the website $123 — $23 + $100 IVL Allow 72 hours
Visitor Visa From $441 — $300 fee + $41 immigration levy + $100 IVL 80% within 2 weeks (checked 20 August 2026)

The NZeTA is $6 cheaper through the official app than through the official website, for an identical authority — see NZeTA cost: app vs website. The Visitor Visa fee breakdown, including the Pacific fee band and the bilateral fee-waiver countries, is at New Zealand Visitor Visa cost.

You will still need to meet the ordinary visitor requirements: funds of NZ$1,000 per person per month, or NZ$400 with prepaid accommodation, plus onward tickets, health and character, and a genuine intention to visit. There is no separate income test for remote work.

Step 4: Deal with tax separately

Immigration and tax are decided by different agencies under different law, and a valid visa says nothing about a tax liability.

INZ's remote-work page notes the boundary: a non-resident working in New Zealand for fewer than 92 days in a 12-month period generally does not incur a New Zealand tax liability on that work, and where a double tax agreement applies between New Zealand and the person's country, that may extend to 183 days.

Those are tax day-counts, not immigration limits. Exceeding them does not breach a visa condition. They are administered by Inland Revenue, and whether a treaty applies depends on your country and your circumstances. Your home country's rules continue to apply on top.

We publish no tax rates and no income thresholds, and we do not assess anyone's tax position. If your stay is long enough for the question to be live, take it to Inland Revenue or a tax adviser. See IRD number and tax for new migrants and transitional tax residency explained.

Beware anyone selling you a nomad visa

Because the product does not exist, every website offering to process a "New Zealand digital nomad visa" application is selling something else — usually an NZeTA request, marked up, or nothing at all.

Two safeguards:

  • The only place to apply is immigration.govt.nz. An NZeTA is requested through INZ's official app or website. A Visitor Visa is applied for through Immigration Online.
  • There is no priority processing service, at any price. New Zealand does not sell faster decisions, and no such fee exists in its published fee schedule.

Five errors in "New Zealand digital nomad visa" content

The category is new enough that most published coverage was written from an announcement rather than from the rules. These are the errors that recur.

1. "There is a 90-day limit on remote work." There is not. INZ's own page states there is no limit on the amount of work. The day-count belongs to tax, not immigration.

2. "You apply for a digital nomad visa." There is nothing to apply for. You apply for an NZeTA or a Visitor Visa; the remote-work allowance comes attached.

3. "You need to prove a minimum income." New Zealand attached no income requirement. The ordinary visitor funds test — NZ$1,000 per person per month, or NZ$400 with prepaid accommodation — is what applies.

4. "The working holiday visa is the digital nomad route." It is a different product with different rights and its own restrictions, and it was not changed on 27 January 2025. It is age-limited, once in a lifetime, and available only to citizens of the countries with a scheme.

5. Out-of-date levy figures. The IVL is $100, and has been since 1 October 2024. A great deal of remote-work coverage still quotes the older, lower amount, which makes the total cost of the route look cheaper than it is.

If you want to stay longer than a visitor can

Remote work on a visitor visa is a way of being in New Zealand for months, not a way of moving there. It carries no residence pathway and no work rights with New Zealand employers.

The routes that do lead somewhere are different products with different tests:

  • Work visa options — all require a New Zealand employment relationship of some kind.
  • Working Holiday Schemes — 45 schemes, age-limited, once in a lifetime, and separate from the visitor remote-work rule. They were not changed on 27 January 2025.
  • Pathways to New Zealand residence — the residence class, which no visitor visa feeds into.
  • Investor and business visas — for people bringing capital rather than a laptop.

Which of these, if any, fits a person's circumstances is a question for a licensed immigration adviser or a New Zealand lawyer. It is not something a website can answer, and in New Zealand it is not something a website may lawfully answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does New Zealand have a digital nomad visa?

No. No digital nomad visa appears in INZ's 168-product visa lookup as at 20 August 2026, and none has been announced. Remote work is permitted instead as a condition of ordinary visitor visas, effective 27 January 2025.

How can I work remotely from New Zealand then?

On a visitor visa or an NZeTA, working for an employer or client based outside New Zealand. INZ places no limit on the amount of work. The limit that binds you is how long you may stay.

How long can a digital nomad stay in New Zealand?

Up to 3 months per visit on a visa waiver — 6 months for United Kingdom citizens — with a maximum of 6 months in any 12-month period. A Visitor Visa can reach 9 months in an 18-month period on a single-entry visa.

What does it cost to work remotely from New Zealand?

$117 via the NZeTA mobile app or $123 via the website, both including the $100 IVL. A Visitor Visa costs from $441. There is no additional charge for the remote-work condition, because it is not a separate product.

Is there an income requirement for remote work in New Zealand?

No. New Zealand attached no minimum income to the remote-work allowance, unlike many dedicated nomad visas. The ordinary visitor funds requirement still applies.

Can I apply for a New Zealand remote work visa?

There is nothing to apply for. Any site offering a "New Zealand digital nomad visa" or "remote work visa" application is not describing a real product. Apply for the ordinary visitor route at immigration.govt.nz.

Will New Zealand introduce a digital nomad visa?

We do not publish predictions about future policy. As at 20 August 2026 no such product exists and none has been announced.

Does working remotely from New Zealand lead to residence?

No. Visitor visas are temporary entry class visas with no residence pathway.
