How to Check Your New Zealand Visa Application Status

Log in to the Immigration Online account the application was lodged from. That is the only place a New Zealand visa application status can be checked. Immigration New Zealand also contacts applicants by phone, by email, or by notification in that account. No commercial website can see your application, whatever it claims.

What a status will not tell you Why the application is where it is, or when it will finish

Step 1: Log in to the account the application was lodged from

New Zealand visa applications live in Immigration Online, INZ's application system. The account they sit in is the one they were lodged from, reached with the RealMe login attached to it.

If an adviser, employer or education provider lodged on your behalf, the application sits in their account, not yours — because INZ requires anyone applying for someone else to use their own Immigration Online account and their own RealMe login. In that case, the status comes from them. See applying on behalf of someone else.

If the login itself is the problem, that is a RealMe matter rather than an INZ one. INZ cannot reset a RealMe credential. See RealMe and Immigration Online.

Step 2: Open the application and read its status

Enhanced Immigration Online — the current build of Immigration Online — provides real-time application status tracking. The status updates as the application moves, rather than only when someone contacts you.

INZ publishes a heading for exactly this, "Check your application status", alongside two others worth knowing about: "Escalating an urgent application" and "Some applications can take longer to process".

Step 3: Check your messages and notifications, not only your email

INZ's published position is that it "phones, emails or notifies you on your online account." All three are real channels and none is a fallback for the others.

Email from immigration departments is filtered into spam folders with tiresome regularity. A notification sitting unread in your account is still a notification that was sent, and a Request for Further Information you did not see is not a Request for Further Information you did not receive. See requests for further information.

Step 4: Compare against the published processing figures — carefully

A status tells you where an application is. It does not tell you whether that is normal. For that, INZ publishes two figures per application type, in working days, updated weekly:

  • Average wait time — the point at which 50% of applications had been processed
  • Most completed within — based on 80% of applications processed

There is no 90th percentile figure. And no wait-times page carries a last-updated timestamp; each says only that the page is updated weekly. So compare, but do not treat either number as a promise about your application. See visa processing times and what happens after you submit.

What the status will not tell you

Three things people expect and do not get:

  • A reason. A status is a stage, not an explanation. INZ does not narrate the internal assessment.
  • A date. INZ's separate processing-time tool gives an estimated decision date based on when you applied and current averages, but that is a modelled estimate for a category, not a commitment about your file.
  • A prediction. Nothing in the status indicates the likely outcome.

Why this search is dangerous, and what to watch for

This is one of the few places on the New Zealand immigration internet where the search results are actively worse than useless.

"Check my New Zealand visa status" is currently dominated not by INZ but by offshore commercial sites — including travel-insurance companies with no connection to New Zealand immigration at all — and by lookalike domains built to resemble government pages. Some sell "status check services". Some reproduce INZ branding, the New Zealand Government shield and a Crown copyright line with no disclaimer.

The facts are simple:

  • No third party can see your application. The record is in INZ's system, behind your RealMe login.
  • Checking a status is free. Anything charging for it is charging for nothing.
  • The only channels are immigration.govt.nz and realme.govt.nz. Official INZ web addresses end in .immigration.govt.nz.
  • Handing your passport details and reference numbers to a lookalike site is the actual risk, not the wasted fee.

Checking a visa you already hold

If the visa has been granted, you are no longer checking an application status — you are checking a visa. All New Zealand visas are issued as an eVisa, held electronically against your passport, with no sticker required for validity. See eVisas and visa labels.

Two things follow that people miss. If you renew your passport, the visa has to be transferred to the new one before you travel — and that applies to eVisas as well as physical labels. See transferring your visa to a new passport.

And an employer wanting to confirm someone's right to work should work from what INZ currently publishes for employers. We will not tell you the old VisaView tool still exists, because it was not found on the current INZ site.

If your application seems stuck

INZ names three things that make applications take longer: information missing, further information needed, and third-party checks — where it states it has limited control over the timeframe.

INZ does publish a heading on escalating an urgent application. What it does not publish is the criteria, a fee or a service standard for doing so, and we are not going to invent any of those. Read INZ's own page before assuming escalation is available for your situation.

What is settled is that there is no expedited or premium channel you can purchase. See can you speed up a New Zealand visa application.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I check my New Zealand visa status online?

Log in to Immigration Online at immigration.govt.nz with the RealMe login the application was lodged under, and open the application. Enhanced Immigration Online provides real-time status tracking.

How can I verify my New Zealand visa?

A granted visa is recorded electronically as an eVisa against your passport, and the record is visible in the Immigration Online account it was granted through. Third-party verification sites cannot access INZ's records.

Is there a New Zealand visa status check by passport number?

Not through any public tool. Status is tied to the Immigration Online account the application was lodged from, behind a RealMe login. Any site offering a passport-number lookup is not INZ.

Does checking my visa status cost anything?

No. It is free and always has been. Commercial sites charging to check a status are charging for something they cannot do.

My adviser applied for me — how do I check the status?

The application sits in the adviser's Immigration Online account, because INZ requires anyone applying on someone else's behalf to use their own account and RealMe login. Ask them for the status.

What does my application status actually mean?

It tells you the stage the application is at. It does not explain why, predict an outcome, or commit to a date. INZ's separate processing-time tool gives an estimated decision date based on category averages.

Why has my status not changed for weeks?

INZ names missing information, further information being needed, and third-party checks as the causes of longer processing — and states it has limited control over third-party checks. Volumes are also higher between November and March.

Will INZ email me when a decision is made?

INZ phones, emails or notifies you in your online account. Check all three, and check the account in particular, since email filtering is the most common reason people miss a message.
